Chinese New Year 2006

Just came back from celebrating chinese new year in KL. Like all chinese people, we will go back to our paternal side on chinese new year eve to have our reunion dinner (Tuan Yuan Fan) with all relatives. For my case it is Alor Setar. We took a 50 minute drive from Butterworth to Alor Setar. It was really cool catching up with relatives once again.

My Cousin’s BF

One cousin of mine just came back from UK. This year is a little special for her. She brought back her boyfriend and introduced to all of us. My cousin is a pharmacist based in Manchester. Her boyfriend is a researcher in the university of Manchester. I sort of like this guy. Good personality and credentials. Hes a PhD holder in somekind of software engineering. To get urself attached in a foreign university doing research, tats impressive to me. As usual, relatives like to comment everytime someone bring back a potential husband back. I find this ridiculous. My cousin is in her 30s. Even if hes a bad guy, just get married. How bad can he be? Since my cousin is such a fussy person. But then, this time their comments on the guy is good.So I think they should get married at once. Tats it, i wont bring any gal back home, until i get married. Critics are just hard to please.. :) My parents will be the hardest nut to crack… :P Nah.. not a problem for me since ive never asked for their opinion on my personal stuff anyway.

Mee-Suah

On the first day of chinese new year, my mom will always cook mee-suah with hard boiled eggs. Its a tradition for most hokkien clan. Mee suah represents longevity. If thats true, then ill have a long life since i ate 3 bowls. :P( lame lame)

I went to KL immediately after eating those mee-suah. Everyone except my dad went down to KL. This years a bit special for me. This is the first time my parents allowed me to drive them to KL. All this while its my mom who drives. Looks like im beginning to gain more of their trust nowadays.

Chinese New Year food

While food in my fathers side is horrible ( trust me its bad ), food in my mothers side is good. I cant live without eating babi. I love the tu kah hai sem (pigs leg with sea cucumber) my aunt cooked. My aunt cooked this intestine, pork ribs with lotus soup. I think I drank at least 3 big bowls. Who cares, its too good to resist. This year we only ate at home. No tai thong (restaurant in KL, we will eat 10 course dinner) this year. Economy not so good. So we ate at home.

Visiting relative whom i dun even know their name.

I went to visit 2 of my grand uncles in malacca. Now i know where does my sanguinism comes from. My 2 grand uncles(my maternal side grand mothers brother) have this very strong sanguine trait. They are in their 60s, yet, they are so active and highly animated. And the kids just love them. They never grow up. I just cant stop laughing the whole listening to them crapping all the way. Those guys talk very loud. It sounds as though their gonna get into a fight or brawl. And i find that most of the things they say, just doesnt pass thru their mind before coming out from their mouth. ( one of my grand uncle keep asking my uncle to drink beer. My uncle said cannot, cos hes driving. My grand uncle said, nevermind, if police stop u, just tell them my name. Macamlah hes the prime minister. Hes just another rubber tapper retiree. who is he la… Tak boleh tehen).

We also went to visit my great grandmother in malacca. Shes 96 this year. Very long life. The sad thing is, shes a already nyanyuk. She couldnt even recognise anyone. All she kept saying was, please come and visit me when u all r free. Frankly, i really respect the family tats taking care of her. I dun even know wat is their connection with me( i think its my grandfather’s brother and sister). It takes a lot of effort and patience to take care a centenarian(ppl living more than 90 years old). My great grand mother is small in size and shes a hunch back. I do pity her. But i think wats there to pity, since not many ppl live tat long… shes very fortunate.. :)

Chinese New Year was great. I really enjoyed spending time with family. I wonder wats wrong with me nowadays, Im becoming more and more like a family kind of person. Kekekeke… well tats a good thing rite? Of course, it shows that im settling down soon.. :P
